After three years of users needing to be within a two-block radius of Nationals Park to place mobile wagers, BetMGM will soon be available throughout the District of Columbia.

The company announced this week that BetMGM will host a media event on July 15 when its offerings expand in the nation’s capital.

“Previously only accessible at Nationals Park, sports fans district-wide will have access to the BetMGM mobile app’s state-of-the-art sports wagering experiences plus related rewards tied to Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Resorts’ properties nationwide, including MGM National Harbor.”

FanDuel’s recently DC online sports betting monopoly coming to an end

In April, FanDuel supplanted Gambet as the only online operator offering Washington D.C. sports betting across the entire district.

FanDuel was originally tethered to Audi Field, home of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United.

After years of complaints from users of Gambet, FanDuel was chosen to offer mobile sports betting throughout Washington for the remainder of Gambet’s contract with the district, which ended in June.

Within the first 30 days of FanDuel replacing Gambet, FanDuel generated around $30 million in handle and $5 million in gross gaming revenue, which exceeded DC Lottery’s expectations.

The Washington Nationals announced its multi-year exclusive partnership with BetMGM in January 2021. BetMGM opened a sportsbook at Nationals Park six months later.

Caesars could also offer sports betting across DC next week

The DC Council voted last month to open the market to other operators. FanDuel responded by threatening to sever ties with the district over the move.

DC Office of Lottery and Gaming Director Frank Suarez warned the body that expanding the mobile sports betting market and ending FanDuel’s exclusivity would result in $15.3 million less revenue for the district over the next four years.

DC sports bettors may also have an additional option unveiled next week. SBC Americas is reporting that Caesars could be joining the fray. Caesars has a deal similar to the FanDuel/Audi Field and BetMGM/Nationals Park arrangements at Capital One Arena, home of the NBA’s Wizards and the NHL’s Capitals.

The arena was also home to a William Hill sportsbook in 2020. It was the first sportsbook in an arena or stadium in DC.

The district’s Entertainment and Sports Arena, home to the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, can also partner with a sportsbook. It is the only one of the four authorized arenas that doesn’t have an existing sportsbook partnership.
