Online sports wagering launched in November in Maryland, with one notable sportsbook missing from the list of available operators. Superbook Sports, a partner of the Baltimore Orioles, has yet to receive a license to operate in Maryland.
Superbook Sports to add retail sportsbook at Camden Yards
Voters approved Maryland sports betting in November 2020. It then took two years for the state to make online sports betting available in The Old Line State.
Seven sportsbooks were available when online wagering finally began on Nov. 23, but Superbook Sports was not one of them.
The brand did, however, receive initial consideration for a Superbook retail and online sportsbook during a Commission meeting last week.
Superbook Sports began in 1986 in Las Vegas. The brand touts its history in the industry, with its website noting:
“Superbook Sports has become the go-to source for leading sports media outlets, other bookmakers and a favorite place to wager for both novice and knowledgeable bettors alike.”
Superbook and the Baltimore Orioles agreed to a long-term partnership in August. The deal includes Superbook launching the first retail sports lounge at the home of the Orioles, Camden Yards.
Partnership excites both Superbook and Orioles
T.J. Brightman, Baltimore Orioles senior vice president and chief revenue officer, said the partnership will enhance fan experience at Camden Yards.
“The Orioles are thrilled to partner with Superbook to enhance our gameday experience with the introduction of their first-ever, on-premise sports lounge. While our organization is striving to build the next World Series contender in Charm City, we are constantly exploring unique opportunities to engage with Birdland’s diverse fanbase and welcome new visitors to downtown Baltimore. The addition of a Superbook sportsbook only reinforces our iconic ballpark’s standing as one of the premier entertainment destinations in the region.”
Kristin Mackey, Superbook Sports vice president of marketing, also touted the partnership after it was announced last summer.
“Superbook Sports is excited about this partnership with the Baltimore Orioles. The heritage and tradition of the Orioles brand fits perfectly with the Superbook brand. To be a part of ‘The Ballpark That Forever Changed Baseball’ is an honor, and we look forward to bringing a one-of-a-kind sports lounge experience to fans. The future of the Orioles is bright. And we look forward to continuing to grow together for years to come.”
Seven online sportsbooks available to Maryland bettors
There are at least three sportsbooks that are expected to be given licenses soon, and Superbook should be one of them. Right now, however, it’s unknown exactly when the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission will give the company a green light to offer online or retail sports betting in Maryland.
Currently, seven sportsbooks have been granted a license to operate an online sportsbook in the state.
