Maryland Lottery and Gaming recently released December’s monthly revenue report for the six casinos in Maryland.
Historically, December has been a strong month for MD casinos. But this time around, there’s a new reason why these numbers could be so impressive: Sports betting in MD has finally launched.

Historic December for MD casinos
Maryland Lottery officials said December is a strong revenue month for Maryland casinos because the holidays are a perfect time for them to offer special promotions and entertainment. In December, casinos had three holiday dates:
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Eve
However, officials tell PlayMaryland that the launch of MD sports betting could have played a major role in December 2021 posting the second-highest total monthly revenue for MD casinos.
Last month, five Maryland casinos had their sports betting operations up and running:
- MGM National Harbor
- Live! Casino & Hotel
- Horseshoe Casino Baltimore
- Ocean Downs
- Hollywood Casino Perryville
Officials said this could have driven additional foot traffic at the casinos.
John A. Martin, Director of Maryland Lottery & Gaming released the following statement:
“The combination of the holiday season and the launch of sports wagering at five of the casinos during December led to great results. We congratulate our casino partners for their ongoing success.”
Maryland’s single-month record for casino revenue is $180.1 million, set in July 2021. The $172.9 million in December 2021 surpassed the $172.4 million in May 2021 to become the second-best month in history.
