March Madness has Maryland bettors fired up

Both University of Maryland basketball teams are in the Big Dance this year. March Madness officially kicks off Thursday on the men’s side, Friday for the women.

Seeded 8th, the Maryland men face No. 9 seed West Virginia Mountaineers in the first round of 64 at noon on March 16. It will be televised on CBS. The Terrapin women, seeded No. 2, host No. 15-seed Holy Cross at Xfinity Center College Park, on Friday, March 17. The time is still to be determined.

2023 March Madness the first for MD online sports betting

Maryland bettors have much to be excited about this year. Both UMD teams are in contention, and for the first time, fans in The Old Line State can bet on the Terrapins from the comfort of their homes. Maryland online sports betting launched last November.

March Madness runs from March 16 through April 3 for the men. The women’s bracket runs from March 17 to Sunday, April 2. First Four games to complete brackets take place Tuesday for the men and Wednesday for the women.

After the First Four games, a total of 64 teams will compete in bracket-style, single-elimination games. Maryland casinos are offering special promotions during the tournaments, and most bars in the state will be televising the games.

Both UMD teams higher seeds in first round

The UMD men enter the Dance with a 21-12 record. Their clash with the Mountaineers is a rematch from 2015, when the Terps fell in that year’s second round. The game is at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL.

The Maryland women (25-6) should have an easier time against Holy Cross (24-8) on Friday. The women’s last appearance in the Final Four was in 2015. The team last won an NCAA championship in 2006.

Viewers can watch men’s and women’s games on CBS, TBS, TNT and TruTV. Other outlets, like Direct TV Stream, fuboTV, YouTube TV and Sling, will be streaming games live. Those looking to head out to Birmingham or Xfinity Center to watch the Terrapins live can find tickets on StubHub, SeatGeek or Vivid Seats.
