Newest Maryland Sports Betting Apps for 2023

Since the initial launch of sports betting in the state, Betfred, Superbook, Fanatics and Crab Sports have all joined the market with their own sportsbooks. Here is some information on them.

Crab Sports

Crab Sports is the 11th and most recent online sportsbook to launch in Maryland. Crab Sports launched in July and is a bit different than some of the others. Crab Sports is based in Maryland and is in competition with more national brands. Crab Sports plans to keep its focus on Maryland and has a partnership with Jimmy’s Famous Seafood.

Fanatics

Sports merchandising giant Fanatics is the 10th online sportsbook to launch in Maryland, doing so in June. Valued in the tens of billions of dollars, Fanatics has the resources to potentially challenge industry leaders DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook for market share in the state. In addition to its own platform, Fanatics recently agreed to purchase the US interests of PointsBet.

Superbook

Superbook launched in Maryland in May, becoming the ninth online sportsbook in the state. Superbook has also secured a high-profile partnership with the Baltimore Orioles. In addition to betting promos on the Orioles, Superbook has set up shop at Camden Yards. The sportsbook opened a lounge at the ballpark in April, and bettors can place wagers from the lounge.

Betfred

Betfred is the eighth online sportsbook to launch in Maryland and the first since the initial seven at the launch of online sports betting in the state. Betfred launched in February, and the UK-based sportsbook is partnered with Long Shot’s in Maryland. In addition to online sports betting, Betfred and Long Shot’s plan to launch a state-of-the art retail sportsbook in 2024.

Online Sportsbooks Coming Soon to Maryland

In addition to the online sportsbooks that have already launched, there are some others that may launch in Maryland in the relatively near future:

  • Queens Sportsbook is awaiting final approval from the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission. It could possibly receive approval as early as August.
  • BetParx was among the first 10 online sportsbooks to pass the first licensing phase, but it is unknown when it will launch. It has a partnership with Greenmount OTB.
  • Bally’s had a presence in several states and was approved for a license in Maryland in December 2022. It is unknown when Bally’s will launch in the state. It recently began a temporary shutdown while it switches to new software.
  • WynnBet was also approved for a license in Maryland in December 2022. It boasts partnerships with the Indianapolis Colts, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, and NASCAR.
  • Bee Fee is a UK-based company that has partnered with Veterans Services Corp., based in the US. Veterans Services Corp. was granted a SWARC license in April.

Betting Markets Available at New Maryland Sports Betting Apps

When a new sportsbook launches, you can expect it to offer bets on a variety of sports and contain plenty of Maryland sportsbook promos. The major ones would include the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer, and college football and basketball. Popular individual sports like tennis, golf, boxing, and MMA will also be offered. Sportsbooks may also offer bets on sports like lacrosse, volleyball, and rugby.

The Maryland Gaming Board determines which betting markets are offered. A full list of approved betting markets can be found on the board’s website.

New sportsbooks should also offer a variety of bet types, in addition to sports to bet on. These bet types include moneylines, spreads, totals, props, futures, and parlays. Live or in-game bets should also be offered, as those have become very popular with sports bettors.

Benefits of Having Multiple Sportsbook Accounts in Maryland

While it can be easy to stick with one betting app that you’re comfortable with, there are some benefits of having multiple online sportsbook accounts. One is that each will have a different welcome bonus, and you can take advantage of all of them by having multiple accounts.

Online sportsbooks may also be running promotions or offering bonuses for specific sports. For example, one sportsbook may offer better odds on the Ravens game that week.

One of the biggest benefits of having multiple accounts is so that you can shop for better lines. For example, suppose you want to bet on the Ravens to win the Super Bowl.

Here are a few of the more established sportsbooks that you may want to check out:

Caesars

If you’re interested in rewards, we recommend Caesars Maryland, which has one of the best rewards programs in the industry. Possible rewards include discounts at Caesars’ retail properties, free gambling vouchers, access to VIP lounges, and more. The rewards program is integrated into the app, so it is easy to get started on accruing reward points.

BetMGM

If you’re interested in promotions, we recommend BetMGM Sportsbook. BetMGM has one of the best welcome bonuses for up to $1,000. BetMGM also offers daily promotions and odds boosts. BetMGM may be particularly attractive for NFL fans in Maryland because BetMGM is the official sports betting partner of the Baltimore Ravens and runs promos related to the team.

FanDuel

If you like betting parlays, we recommend FanDuel, which is the market leader in both the US and Maryland. FanDuel’s same-game parlay feature is great for betters who like to combine their wagers. As its name implies, a same-game parlay allows you to easily combine all of your bets (e.g. moneyline, total, props) for a single game into a parlay.

BetRivers

If you like live betting, we recommend BetRivers in Maryland. Live betting is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to bet, as the odds for various bets will change quickly in response to what is happening during the contest. This enables bettors to stay engaged throughout with different offerings, and BetRivers offers a wide range of bets and an easy-to-use interface.

What Perks Do New Betting Apps Offer Maryland Customers?

For a new sportsbook to gain traction and market share, it needs to differentiate itself from the established sportsbooks and entice players. Here are some things to look for:

  • Generous welcome bonuses – a new sportsbook may offer deposit matches, bonus bets, rewards programs, or a number of other bonuses for new players.
  • Competitive odds – A new sportsbook may offer slightly better odds in an attempt to attract players. For example, if the established sportsbooks are offering the Ravens at -3.5, it may be possible to find a slightly better line like -3.
  • Odds boosts – A sportsbook may offer better odds on specific bets. For example, an online Maryland sportsbook might offer a parlay on the Capitals and Wizards to both win on the same night. The original odds might be +200, but the sportsbook decides to boost the odds to +250. You would get an extra $50 if you make a $100 bet that wins.
  • Promos for specific teams and events – A sportsbook may offer special promos or bonuses during Ravens games, the MLB postseason, or March Madness, for example.

Can the New Maryland Betting Apps Compete for Market Share?

Even by offering bonuses, promos, and competitive odds, it is still a challenge for a new online sportsbook to get market share when the market leaders are entrenched.

Two online sportsbooks, DraftKings and FanDuel, have had around 80% of the market share in the state. The sportsbooks have been the market leaders since online sports betting launched in Maryland in late 2022. BetMGM has been a fairly distant third.

There is also a trend toward consolidation in online sports betting, including in Maryland. Some smaller sportsbooks have either shut down, exited the market, or been acquired by others.

It will be interesting to see if any of the new sportsbooks can gain significant market share. Among the newcomers, Fanatics may be one to watch. It has a lot of money, so it may be able to mount a serious challenge. Fanatics recently outbid DraftKings to purchase the US assets of PointsBet, which had around 1% of the Maryland market at the time of the sale.

Responsible Gambling Tools at New Maryland Sports Betting Apps

When betting online in Maryland, it’s important to keep responsible gambling principles in mind. It’s important to recognize that problem gambling affects all demographics and to be aware of warning signs such as gambling more than you can afford to lose.

In Maryland, online sportsbooks and apps have some tools to promote responsible gambling. They provide a link for players to self-exclude or set daily limits on time or losses. If that’s not enough, players can engage in the voluntary self-exclusion program run by the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency.

Online sportsbooks also have information on their responsible gambling pages to help those who are struggling to find the resources and help that they need from organizations like the National Council on Problem Gambling (1-800 GAMBLER).
