How do the NBA Playoffs work?

The NBA Playoffs is a 16-team four-round elimination tournament featuring the top eight teams from each of the NBA’s Eastern and Western Conferences fighting for the title of NBA Champion and the Larry O’Brien Trophy. In 2021, a playoff play-in tournament in each conference, to determine the seven and eighth seeds, was added to the front end of the playoffs. The league has yet to decide if the play-in tournament will be a permanent thing.

The NBA Playoffs is a seeded tournament with an eight-team bracket in each conference. It’s 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5 in the first round. The winners of 1 vs. 8 and 4 vs. 5, and the winners of 2 vs. 7 and 3 vs. 6 meet in the second round. The winners move on to the Conference Finals and the Conference Finals winners meet in the NBA Finals. Each round is filled with seven-game series following a 2-2-1-1-1 format. Home-court advantage goes to the team with the best regular-season record in each series.
